This week we were able to get out and do a lot of fishing on Spring Creek. We had some success using a variety of patterns to hook up with nice fish. The BWO emergences varied from day to day but at some point the trout were working on top to size 18 - 20 Blue-Winged Olive patterns. I usually started the day fishing a tandem Sucker Spawn/Baetis Emerger and Olive Scud pattern.

The fishing conditions have remained a bit low and the visibility has been very clear. We received minimal amount of precipitation with some snow flurries and rain the last week. Between March 8th and 9th the flows were a bit above average, but Spring Creek is very resilient in returning back to normal conditions following any type of normal precipitation.
We need additional rainfall to alleviate the sunlights ability to grow the vegetation because it is already well ahead of schedule (and somewhat of an annoyance when nymph fishing). So cross your fingers and do your rain dance because a low clear spring season could mean serious vegetation growth on Spring Creek.

Around 11:00, I'll tie on a Blue-Winged Olive emerger with the Olive Scud until I see enough trout work on top to the blue-winged olive duns. Once the duns have amassed, I'll tie on a BWO dry and fish it with 6X tippet. If you present a drag free drift, the trout should not be able to refuse your presentation!
This hatch should continue into the next few weeks and I look forward to the next opportunity that I'll have to enjoy a full day on the stream. However, since fly-fishing is very few of our professions I'll have to seize the next chance that I have or hear from some of you fly-fisherman on how your day on the stream went! Let's hope it continues to be as fun and exciting as it has been for Brian and I in the last week!
